Project Description
This project will involve the reconstruction of one of the busiest intersections in west Norman.  The Main Street and 36th Avenue West intersection is bordered on two sides by Norman's only mall, Sooner Mall, and many other businesses like Sam's Club, Wright's IGA grocery store, and the west side's only post office depend on access to the intersection.  The area has been the cause of many traffic accidents over the years because of the balance between the public's need for arterial throughways and business corridor access.

To make the area safer, new access drives will be constructed for several of the properties in order to decrease the number of potential traffic conflict points.  This will require right-of-way plans for acquisition of both temporary and permanent right-of-way.  In addition, many utilities use the Main Street and 36th Avenue West corridors, which requires utility relocation plans.  Storm sewers and grated inlets will carry storm water drainage.  A new traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of River Oaks Drive and 36th Avenue NW.  Because of the high volume of traffic in the area, the project will be constructed in phases with detour traffic for both arterials occupying one half of the roadway at a time during construction.
